To the West, a journey to uncharted land……...

We went through Katherine again but this time we didn’t buy as much veggies as we were going to cross the border to WA. We stayed at two free camps along the way, the free camps we stayed at were actually pretty decent. I didn’t need to take out the shovel as there were toilets. The first one, we had free entertainment as when we came in, someone, a grey nomad (old person with no set home) was playing the bagpipes, interesting instrument if you ask me. We spent the night at the camp and we met lovely people. Next free camp, I was half asleep as mum woke me up just before we had to leave, by the time we got there the camping site was already full of people but luckily a lady came out, greeted us and gave us her spot as they were leaving, they also gave us veggies as they were going to cross the border, so we ate double.

Just before the border we stayed at caravan park called Zebra rock. It is called zebra rock as there is a zebra rock mine and it's one of the very few if not only place where you can find zebra rock. We have stayed there previously 3 years ago and really enjoyed it.

Dad bought mum a zebra rock necklace as a reminder of this trip. Zebra rock is very unique as it can be dated back to 1 billion years old. Zebra rock has a unique pattern which is made by flowing patterns of iron dark red to brown. When we arrived at Zebra rock we decided to stay for a couple of days because we wanted to do the Lake Argyle sunset tour. We setup our caravan, had some lunch, gobbled down a few sandwiches and set of exploring. We went to the office, they allow kids to have a small fragment of zebra rock to polish, we got straight to work polishing our zebra rock day and night ASAP. A few hours later we came back with a whole different zebra to rock as it not only showed new colors, but we shaped it.

We got ready for our sunset tour. After being very proud of our zebra rock we got in the bus and headed to the boat. I jumped in quickly as I saw my first croc just chilling on the shore waiting for us, it felt very different to Melbourne, I didn’t know what to expect I just tried to act cool.

The boat took us to a little island where we had some food, did some fishing and I jumped in for a quick swim. I didn’t see any of my good friends the crocs, fortunately. On the way back, the sunset greeted us, and it was spectacular. I think I saw the most number of fresh water crocs during this tour.

When we got back we had a paper parcel full of goodies, fish and chips. We spent the following day searching the billabong for some zebra rocks, we found some which was great. We left zebra rock with a smile on our face and headed across the border to the Western Australia finally.

We arrived at our caravan park around 11am and found out that it was full. We were at a loss so we looked on wiki camps and our problem was solved as there was the showgrounds a few streets away. We stayed at showgrounds in Kununurra for a week, we needed to decide if we were going to go through the Gibb river road (Gibb). While we were at Kununurra we taped the caravan to prevent further damage done my rocks and we deflated our tyres to 20 PSI to help with the corrugations. We meet a nice family at Kununurra and while we were there we played with them in our spare time. Once the car looked like Gibb river road standards we set off for the bumpy journey.
